Yes, it
does look exactly like a Dodge 1500, because it
is one.
The only difference is that in Brazil it had a 1800 cc engine - unlike the Argentinian version, which had a 1500 cc one, hence the "Dodge 1500" name there.
In it's early days in Brazil (1973) it suffered from some manufacturing problems, more a result of a too fast and not careful adaptation of the base car (Hillmann Avenger) to Brazilian road conditions. This led to a bad image, so Chrysler of Brazil did an extensive rework on the mechanical parts of the car, this time turning it into a very reliable vehicle - so much so, actually, that they included a "garantia total" (full warranty), which only didn't cover the tyres and headlamp lamps (at that time, unlike today, warranties were extremely limited).
Willing to put aside the bad reputation, and also to make a statement that this was a completely new car, Chrysler decided to rename it as "Dodge Polara", which was considered a "good sounding name" by the marketing dept., as ElCamino pointed out.
BTW the original (big size) Dodge Polara was also manufactured is Argentina in the late 60s, hence making it impossible to rename the "Dodginho" (as it was widely known, literally "little Dodge") as Polara in that country. Also, the car didn't suffer from a bad image in Argentina, probably due to a better adaptation, so a renaming action was not considered necessary for that market.
