Both were oficially sold in the US for quite a long time.

Peugeot started sales in the US in 1958. The 405 was the last Peugeot vehicle sold in the US, the company withdrawing in 1991.

As for Alfas, in 1995 Alfa Romeo ceased exporting cars to the United States, being the the Alfa Romeo 164 the last one sold in the US, resuming sales with the 8C Competizione in October 2008.

Not sure if this was the one you saw, but...

That is the Peugeot 505. It was sold in the USA.

Alfa sold a number of cars in the US. They sold the 164, Spider, Milano...

Maybe you saw the Milano?

(I'm not a big fan of Italian cars, so I probably missed some when I was naming the cars Alfa sold.)

Great, the 75 (sold as "Milano" in the USA)!
Look at Wikipedia for USA Alfa story:

<< In 1995 Alfa Romeo ceased exporting cars to the United States, the last model to be sold being the 164. Rumors began of their return, however as the FAQ on Alfa's English website had said "The long-awaited return of Alfa Romeo to the United States market should take place by 2007, with a range of new models." >>
