Well heres the real truth to the thing story, back in wwii vw had this car called the Kübelwagen aka Type 82 which was built as a counterpart to the Willys Jeep for various terrains and other activities of the German army. Later on VW realized hey maybe the Americans would liek soething with similiar styling fora beach cruise! and then came the Thing, built on a modified beetle chassis and using many beetle parts like her earlier counterpart the thing was very cost efficient and easy to prdocue. Both the front and rear doors on both sides are the same and can be swapped out, alothough it is not reccommended because of body fillings may have lead to mismatching seams.
